origin

The Dogue de Bordeaux originates from France and counts, due to its descent of the Alans, to the oldest dogs of the country. They received their name in 1863 at the first French dog exhibition at the Jardin d'Acclimation in Paris. At that time the appearance of the dogs was still regionally different, since there was no determined standard. A first beginning was published 1896 by Pierre Megnin. In the year 1910 the " Étude Critique sur le Dogue de Bordeaux " by Professor J. Kunstler appeared, representing the Dogue de Bordeaux with numerous figures and descriptions. It describes the race, how it is still available today. Here you recognize that that the Dogue de Bordeaux is not a breed which is bread to "modern human opinions" - it retained its original appearance until today.

standard

The Dogue Bordeaux is a dog with a muscular body and retaining a harmonious general outline. It is " in deep position ", i.e. the distance breastbone soil is smaller than chest height. With a height at the withers of 60 to 68 cm (male) or 58 to 66 cm (female) it belongs to the larger dogs. Their chest scope should amount to 25-30 cm more than the height at the withers. The weight of a a male begins with 50 kg or 45 kg with females.

The head of the Dogue de Bordeaux is powerfully, broad and seen from the front trapezoidal. It is shaped by symmetrical folds, which are mobile - depending upon the attention of the dog. The head scope of the males corresponds in approximately the height at the withers. Regarded from above the broad and strong muzzle is square. Its scope amounts to approximately 2/3 of the perimetre of the skull. A special feature forms the dentures. The Dogue de Bordeaux has got an undershot, i.e. the lower inscisors are clearly before the upper.

The ears are relatively small and somewhat darker than the remaining skin, which is in colored in all gradations from mahagoni to isabell. White drawings at the chest and at the paws are tolerated. The mask is black, brown and without mask. Their dark-brown eyes are oval and far apart-being. From the the level of the throat to the chest a pronounced dewlap runs.

The limbs have a strong building of bones and are very muscular. The hindquarters show with a thrustful motion a strong impression, although it is somewhat more weakly developed. The tail is carried deeply in resting position (was never cut) and reaches up to the branch joint. It is very thick at the base.

charakter

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a relatively calm and balanced companion. The dog is friendly opposite humans and animal and is alsways ready to protect "his family " in case of emergency. However the strong appearance of the Dogue de Bordeaux is already deterrence enough. The Dogue de Bordeaux needs the close contact to its family, she is absolutely no kennel dog (!).
It is a "stubborn" dog, which could pass a test for a accompanying dog (recommendable) if you could teach him him in a sympathetic way, but be consequent. It is however no real "working dog" like a german shepherd or rottweiler.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a no dog who has to run the whole day, and due to it it is not recommended for extreme sportsmen. With something exercise it participates however enthusiastically in longer walks and short wheel travels. Here one should begin only at an appropriate age, because the Dogue de Bordeaux belongs to the "late developers".

Unfortunately the breed is still susceptible for hip dysplasia. For the avoidance of stomach turn the meals should be distributed on several rations, also it has to calm down and sleep thereafter.
With the anaesthesia of the Dogue de Bordeaux be careful - a small dosage is important.
Their life expectancy is at approx. 8 years.
